A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
